Rotary District 6920, located in the State of Georgia
in the United States, has operated Medical Equipment Transport Service
(METS) since 2003 in order to provide medical equipment
and supplies to third world nations that do not have the financial
resources to purchase the tools that they need to provide adequate medical
care to much of their population.
Through the generosity of the Rotarians in District 6920 and the participating medical facilities, avoidable deaths and suffering can, in many cases, be reduced and quality of life can be enhanced for those who need medical attention. This is accomplished by the shipment of containers filled with available medical equipment and supplies to those countries.
METS is a 501(c)3
corporation and is therefore
qualified to accept tax deductible contributions in the US. It is under
the direction of a Board of Directors constituted primarily of current,
past and future District Governors of Rotary District 6920. It has
an Executive Director who coordinates many generous volunteers who collect
surplus operating room supplies and medical equipment; these volunteers
also sort, count and record all of the supplies in what we call "sort
days".
The warehouse where all equipment and supplies are collected, sorted and packed is located in Savannah, Georgia which has the fourth largest container port in the US with excellent service to ports around the world. METS welcomes volunteers from all organizations to participate in sort days and to help with the practical work of receiving, packaging and shipping all of the donations. |
